After two decades of comparatively slow growth from 1969 through 1988, giving shows a steep increase, adjusted for inflation, from 1989 through 2008.

The amount given from corporations, foundations, and individuals has steadily risen since 1994. Bequests increased in amount from 1994–1998 to the 1999–2003 period and have held at approximately the same level in the past five years.
