The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University issues a quarterly list of announced gifts of $1 million or more. From this list, Giving USA has compiled a list of gifts or pledges of $10 million or more made by individuals (not corpo­ rations or foundations) announced in 2008. The amounts reported here are those that appear in newspapers or other media outlets; they have not been verified with the recipient institution.

This is not a complete listing of all gifts in the United States of $10 million or more because many such gifts are not reported in the press. It also does not represent actual transfers made to institutions in 2007. Many of the gifts are pledges or estate gifts that will be paid over time. Gifts in kind are reported at values announced in the media.

Gifts are organized in descending order by size and then alphabetically by donor’s last name. The size categories are $1 billion and above; $500 million to $999.99 million; $250 million to $499.99 million, $100 million to $249.99 million, $50 million to $99.99 million, $25 million to $49.99 million, and $10 million to $24.99 million.
